The New Town Hall: exclusive guided tour of the historic building

The New Town Hall is located right in the centre of Marienplatz and is probably one of the most famous buildings in Munich. Every day at 11am and 12pm (and in summer also at 5pm) a carillon begins, which attracts many tourists every year.

The FC Bayern football team always celebrates the championship on the balcony of the Town hall square, which you have probably seen on TV. But of course the New Town Hall offers much more.

Even in bad weather, you can visit the New Town Hall as part of a 2-hour guided tour with a certified guide* and learn a lot about Munich’s history. If the weather is fine, you can also enjoy a great view of Munich city centre from the town hall tower.

Scholars Lounge Irish Pub: Experience Irish culture in Munich

This tip is something completely different and somehow also one of the bar insider tips, even in good weather. The Scholars Lounge Irish Pub may only have a limited connection to Bavarian culture, but it is definitely worth recommending. The service here is authentically Irish and even the waiters don’t speak a word of German.

Especially in the evenings, you will experience an incredible atmosphere here that you would otherwise only experience in Ireland. So if you’ve always wanted to know what it’s like in a real Irish pub, then you should definitely pay a visit to the Scholars Lounge Irish Pub in Munich.

Tip: It’s best not to go to the pub until 6pm/19pm, as it doesn’t get busy until later. But be warned, because it gets really crowded here.

Accessibility: Unfortunately not, as you have to descend a flight of stairs and the pub is located in a cellar.

The best cinemas in Munich (incl. insider tip)

Like any large metropolis, Munich offers you a large selection of cinemas. The selection ranges from modern to classic cinemas and also cinemas with a special theme. So you can bridge Munich’s bad weather with a visit to the movies.

Mathäser at Stachus

The best-known movie theater in Munich is the Mathäser Kino directly on Stachus. The Mathäser is a very modern cinema with 14 screens and the most modern technology you can find in the cinema sector. There are also so-called D-Box seats in some theaters, which are movable and enhance the cinema experience even more. The program includes all current cinema titles.

Accessibility: Limited accessibility. Detailed information can be found in the cinema’s FAQ.

Cacillac Cinema

The Cadillac Cinema is one of our favourite cinemas in Munich. Privately run, it is more of a small cinema with a current cinema programme. However, the Cadillac Kino is very lovingly furnished and, as the name suggests, the cinema is built in the American style of the 1950s.

The cinema auditoriums are also themed, which I really like. So if you want to visit an unusual cinema, we can highly recommend the Cadillac cinema.

Website Program: https://cadillac.movieplace.de/

Directions: Subway stop Arabellapark or Richard-Strauss-Straße

Accessibility: Limited, as the movie theaters are only accessible via a staircase in the basement. However, staff can provide assistance if requested in advance.

Rio Filmpalast

At the Rio Filmpalast, you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Even the entrance area outside is reminiscent of a movie theater from the old days. Nevertheless, modern technology is used here. The program is mainly alternative, but current cinema titles are also shown.

Website & Programm: https://www.riopalast.de/

Accessibility: limited accessibility. However, staff will help wheelchair users into the movie theater. The GRETA system is also used. See here.

ASTOR Film Lounge at ARRI

The ASTOR Film Lounge at the ARRI is a premium cinema with unusual auditoriums. There is a small movie theater that is more reminiscent of a reading room and the seats are also unusual. There are not very many films in the program. Nevertheless, current films are played in the program.

Website & Programm: https://muenchen.premiumkino.de/

Accessibility: limited accessibility. It is best to inform the cinema in advance. There is also a pick-up service from the nearest bus stop.

American Cinema Cincinnati

One of the least known cinemas in Munich and therefore also an insider’s tip is the Cincinnati cinema in the very south of Munich in the former American settlement colony at Perlacher Forst.

The cinema was built by Americans according to US standards and has the typical open centre aisle that you mainly see in American cinemas. So if you’ve always wanted to visit an American cinema, I recommend the Cincinnati. Although the cinema programme is very sparse, it mostly shows current titles.

You can only pre-book tickets by phone or buy them directly at the cinema. I have always bought the tickets on site, as the cinema has never been full.

Website Program: https://cincinnati-muenchen.de/

Accessibility: The cinema is located on the first floor, but is only accessible via a staircase. It is best to inform the cinema staff in advance.

How to get there: The bus number 220 stops directly in front of the cinema and departs from the Giesing underground station.
